Abstract

Objective: To investigate the knowledge, practices and methods used by the nursing team to manage thirst in the immediate postoperative period. Methods: A descriptive study, with a quantitative approach, carried out with nursing professionals from the Post-Anesthetic Recovery Room of two hospitals in the city of Recife/PE. A questionnaire composed of two parts was applied that allowed to collect data on the sociodemographic profile and on thirst management in the immediate postoperative period. Results: The most used strategies for managing thirst were moistening the patient's lips and offering a small amount of liquid through the syringe. As for the volume of liquid to be offered, 59.6% stated that liquid should not be offered and 67.3% that the difference in the temperature of the liquid offered does not interfere with the patient's satiety. Conclusion: It was found that there are weaknesses in the practices and knowledge related to the management of the thirst of patients assisted by the nursing team in the immediate postoperative period.
