The present study aimed to show the profile of the published works, both nationally and internationally, from 2003 to 2017, with a survey made from the Regional Portal of the Virtual Health Library (BVS), targeting indexed journals in Medline, Lilacs and Index Psychology - Technical-scientific journals. This is a review on Aging in Long- Term Institutions for the Elderly (ILPIs) from the perspective of Aging in Place (AIP). Among the biopsychosocial issues discussed in the articles are: 1) Factors and motives that influence the decision to reside in an institution; 2) The feelings and meanings of aging at home or in LTCI, and 3) Aging at home or at LTR: family, social involvement and identification with the home. The authors found extensive discussion in the international literature considering the Aging in Place (AIP) perspective in a Long Stay Institution for the Elderly (LTCI) and in their own house. It was observed a focus on the reflection on biopsychosocial, family, social (protagonism) and environmental (identification and belonging) aspects, as well as on the quality of life evaluation of the elderly living in their own home or in ILPI. However, there are no national studies linking the perspective of aging in the locality from residency in a long term care institution.
