Introduction: Aromatherapy consists of the use of essential oils (EO) as a therapy to provide balance/rehabilitation of an individual. These EO are extremely volatile, therefore, they disperse quickly in the environment, are low in fat and have medicinal properties. In 2006, the Ministry of Health approved its use in the Unified Health System. Its practice is essential for Nursing. Objective: The present study consisted of a literature review on how these oils are used in the puerperium. Method: Searches were carried out in the Periodicals of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) and in PubMed. Applying inclusion criteria and excluding texts in other formats. Results: The articles analyzed showed the effectiveness of this therapy in the most common symptoms of the puerperium above, but also made reservations about the scarce scientific and formal evidence of its use. Lavender EO was the most used in the studies. Conclusion: It is concluded that Aromatherapy is an effective therapy, but more clinical studies should be invested in to increase the level of knowledge and stimulate nursing training to increase its use and the autonomy of the class.
