Introduction: Aromatherapy consists of the use of essential oil (EO) as a therapy to provide balance/rehabilitation of an individual. These EO are extremely volatile, therefore, they disperse quickly in the environment, having medicinal properties. In 2006 the Ministry of Health approved its use in the Unified Health System. Its practice is essential for nursing care. Objective: The present study consists of a literature review on how these oils can be used in prenatal care. Methods: Searches were carried out in the Journals of Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS) and in PubMed. Applying inclusion and text with clear methodologies. Results: Common articles (13) and books (02) delve into the attempt to treat more prenatal symptoms, but also attempts to make reservations about the scientific evidence of its use. The EO of Lavanda and Rosa was the most used in the studies. Conclusion: Aromatherapy is an effective therapy, but we need to invest in more studies to increase the level of knowledge and stimulate the training of nursing, its use and class autonomy.
