Abstract

Objective: to determine which biomarkers have been related to upper limb function functionality in acute, subacute or chronic phases of ischemic or hemorragic stroke. Methods: Systematic review protocol, registered in PROSPERO (CRD42021274244), with an unlimited data search in PubMed, PubMed PMC, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, Cinahl, and ProQuest. Independent reviewers will evaluate titles, abstracts and full text of articles from these databases to identify potentially elegible studies. Relevant articles will be assessed for risk of bias and quality using the Quality In Prognosis Studies (QUIPS) tool. The review will include primary (original), controlled experimental or observational studies (cross-sectional, case-control or longitudinal studies) with biomarker analyses at different stages of stroke for functionality or recovery prediction. Patients under 18 years of age, diagnosis of transient ischemic attack, and articles that do not explain in detail the criteria for biomarker assessment will be excluded. The quality and risk of bias of the studies will be independently assessed by two researchers. Data synthesis will be performed using narrative summary and quantitative analysis. Random effects meta-analysis models will be employed for comparison between groups based on the outcome variables found.
