Abstract

The present study aimed to characterize and estimate vaccination coverage and adverse post-vaccination events (EAPV) in Paraíba, from 2011 to 2017, in children under one year of age. To this end, an epidemiological, retrospective, time series, ecological research was developed, using secondary data stored in the period from 2011 to 2017, related to individuals aged one year or less, coming from the Information System Program National Immunization System (SI-PNI) and Post-Vaccination Adverse Event Surveillance Information System (SI-EAPV) of the State of Paraíba. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive statistics techniques and Pearson's Chi-square test, with p < 0.05 being considered significant. The results of this study revealed heterogeneity in vaccination coverage among the immunobiologicals studied, demonstrating an increase or at least maintenance of stability in vaccination coverage of BCG, hepatitis B, human rotavirus, meningococcal and pneumococcal vaccines, whereas, for pentavalent vaccines, polio, yellow fever and first boosters of meningococcal and pneumococcal, drops in vaccination coverage were observed for the historical series evaluated. There was also an increase in EAPV notifications throughout the period between 2011 and 2017, with a peak in the last year evaluated. The immunobiological with the highest occurrence of EAPV was pentavalent and the most frequent event was fever. Based on the results found in this study, it can be concluded that there are instabilities in the entire historical series related to vaccination coverage in the State of Paraíba.
