Abstract

Introduction: Anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic period is an unprecedented situation that required radical changes in older individuals' life, which generated fear, frustration, worry and emotional fragility, making this population more prone to triggering several psychopathologies. Aim: To understand the meanings of anxiety among the elderly in the context of social withdrawal by the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study. Thirty elderly people of both sexes participated in the study. For data analysis, the Collective Subject Discourse method was used. Results: From the explored theme, "meaning of anxiety during social distancing by the COVID-19 pandemic", two central ideas were evidenced: "inhibiting feelings" and "to want to do everything now". Conclusion: Social distancing was a COVID-19 prevention resource, but it also was the reason for mental health compromises.
