Objective: To verify the main benefits, indications and physiological effects of resistance exercise as a non-pharmacological tool in the prevention and or treatment of postmenopausal women with metabolic syndrome. Methods: This is a literature review, in which we used articles in Portuguese and in English of journals indexed in the Bireme, Pubmed, Scielo, Lilacs and Pedro data bases, published between 2002 and 2017. The search for articles used in the respective study occurred from August 2016 to July 2017. Results: Resistance exercise improves physical fitness, maintains lean mass, increases strength and resting metabolic rate, favors energy demand and improves bone mineral density; it has been highlighted as responsible for quality of life in postmenopausal women. Conclusion: Resistance exercise showed significant results both in the metabolic syndrome and the effects of ovarian failure, and should therefore be incorporated into the general context of treatment.
