Introduction: In 2016, surf became an Olympic Sport and the interest of the scientific community about the sport grew. Objective: To carry out a literature review about the characteristics and training methodology in recreational and professionals surfers. Methods: A survey study from Pubmed, Scielo, Sportdiscus e Lilacs databases with the key words: surf, strength training, endurance training, lesion and surfers in Portuguese or English language, during 2000-2018. Results: After selection by title and abstracts, seventeen studies were selected. Three studies investigated the strength training and paddling performance, one study investigated HIIT and paddling performance, four studies investigated surfers heart rate during a surf session, two studies investigated the oxygen consumption, three studies investigated the incidence of injuries and one study analyzed the isokinetic strength in surfers. Conclusion: Recreational and professional surfers have good cardiorespiratory fitness, strength training enhance the paddle performance and the principle factor that trigger injuries is the contact with the surfboard. No studies were found about the specific training and the surfer performance in the wave.
