Studies show beneficial effects of exercise in patients who have chronic kidney disease and undergo hemodialysis. Objective: To review in the literature studies that address the role of physical exercise in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: A systematic review was performed with the descriptors exercise / physical exercise AND kidney disease, in the Lilacs and Pubmed databases. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 22 studies were selected and analyzed. Results: Sleep quality improvement, as well as quality of life, reduction of pain sensation and improvement of dialysis efficiency were identified after the application of an exercise program. Conclusion: These findings demonstrate that the exercise program has a positive response, in addition to being safe. However, there is a need for further studies to identify the ideal moment of exercise and the type of exercise.
