Introduction: The effects of practicing physical exercises are widely known. In a general way it improves physical, mental and social well-being, and it also mitigates the incidence of non-communicable diseases or infirmities, such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Furthermore, physical fitness is recognized as an important predictor of hypokinetic diseases. Nevertheless, there is a need for studies on that field concerning teenagers. Objective: To analyze the indicators of physical fitness of 77 secondary scholars aged between 15 and 17 years old, in the city of Itabaiana (Sergipe). Methods: After evaluating their physical strength, body flexibility and cardiovascular endurance, the variables were correlated with both age and gender. Results: In the evaluation of Body Fat and Flexibility Percentage, the pupils (except for 16 year-old girls) presented an acceptable outcome, with the most part of them receiving "average" or "very good" ratings. As for the tests of Cardiorespiratory Capacity and Physical Strength/Abdominal Endurance, they showed unsatisfactory results, varying from "weak" to "very weak". Conclusion: The pupils cannot be considered to present an acceptable health-related physical fitness, and it is thus necessary that parents and school staff intervene in order to raise awareness and encourage these teenagers and other pupils to engage in physical activities
