Abstract

Introduction: Physical exercise has the potential to improve the health condition of frail elderly people. However, knowledge about physical exercise at home for this population is scarce. Objective: To investigate in the scientific literature physical exercise programs implemented in the home of frail elderly people with contributions to functional capacity. Methods: Integrative literature review between 2010 and 2020, in the Web of Science, Medline and Cinahl databases. Results: From 290 articles, we included 12 articles that revealed positive effects of physical exercise programs at home on the functional capacity of frail elderly people. Physical exercise programs included strength, balance, flexibility and endurance training. Conclusion: This review demonstrates the benefits of physical exercise in the home of frail elderly people, not only in functional capacity, but also in the participation in activities of daily living, incidence of falls, fear of falling, pain intensity, episodes of acute illness and quality of life.
