Objective: Describing the implementation of the project “Welcoming those who welcome” at the University of Pernambuco, at the Amaury de Medeiros Integrated Health Center in Recife/PE. Methods: This is a qualitative, descriptive study, developed from the experience of the actions conducted by the Extension Project Welcoming those who welcome, from June to December 2015, held at the Integrated Health Center Amaury de Medeiros, in the city of Recife, PE. The steps involved in conduction of the activities consisted of guidelines, professional awareness, structuring and execution/reception. Results: It was verified the experience of extensionist students focused on their professional performance through the responsibility to guide companions about their rights during hospital care. Contributing to a more conscious experience of the birth and birth process, as well as providing students with an early contact with actions based on the precepts of humanization. Conclusion: The moments experienced by the students made possible to know, understand and identify the transformation of reality. However, some professionals are still resistant about the acceptance of the companion during labor, and in the presence of extension students. This being the biggest impasse found, overcoming it takes place through collective construction through dialogue.
