Abstract

Objective: To identify the studies that describe the procedures, technique and rationale of cupping therapy for signaling the state of the art and good practices. Methods: Narrative review, outlined in six phases: choice of theme; literature search, source selection, cross-sectional reading, writing and references. Results: The search resulted in 401 articles, of which five studies were carefully selected. Key findings include: Verification of a study that provides evidence regarding the effects of cupping pressures and durations on skin blood flow response. Also, the identification of possible cupping therapy mechanisms based on theories that explain its various effects. Another study in which a checklist was prepared as a quality model in the execution of the technique in question. And research signaling a reduction in blood pressure with the use of cupping therapy with bloodletting. Conclusion: The highlighted studies provided evidence on the effectiveness of cupping therapy in the treatment of certain clinical indications. Indeed, it is considered that cupping is a traditional method, and is currently being quite indicated as an adjunct to conventional medical treatment, for a range of medical and health conditions.
