Introduction: Transcranial electrical stimulation (TSE) is a noninvasive neuromodulation technique that has been used as an adjunct in the treatment of depressive disorders due to its ability to modify cortical excitability. Objective: To analyze the effects of TSE on depressive disorders and propose parameters for clinical practice. Methods: This ystematic review included randomized clinical trials using TSE in the treatment of depressive disorders, published between 2010 and June 2018, in English and Portuguese. Results: 14,775 studies were found, with only 15 studies selected for the sample. All selected studies used TSE by direct current and showed similarities in relation to the other electrical parameters of treatment and locations of application of the electrodes. In 12 of the 15 studies evaluated, significant improvement (p < 0.05) of depressive symptoms was observed and the adverse effects are inferior to conventional treatments. Conclusion: TSE is effective in the treatment of depressive disorders and that this is directly related to the appropriate use of parameters and techniques for applying electric current.
