Abstract

Introduction: Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is the falling of female pelvic organs through the vaginal opening, due to the weakening of the pelvic support system. Ethnicity is considered as directly associated with the occurence of POP. Objective: Reviews published in the last 5 years to verify the relationship between ethnicity and the incidence of pelvic organ prolapse in women of different races. Methods: Integrative literature review carried out through a search of scientific articles published in printed and electronic journals in the period from 2015 to March 2020, in databases PubMed, Bireme and PEDro. Results: Four studies were included according to the eligibility criteria. Studies on ethnic and/or racial differences in POP or descending perineum were identified. The population studied was Afro-descendant, Caucasian and Asian women. In the methodological evaluation, only one study was considered moderate, while the other were considered strong. Conclusion: After analyzing the studies, it was possible to observe some ethnic/racial differences in the incidence of POP, such as symptoms, influence of genetics and composition of muscle fibers. Afro-descendant women had a higher rate of anterior prolapse, Caucasian women of posterior prolapse, and Asian women had a greater uterine descent and vaginal vault prolapse.
