Abstract

Objective: This study aims to verify the main benefits and physiological effects of an exercise program, as a physical therapy intervention, during the postoperative period of a bariatric surgery. Methods: This is a systematic literature review and a bibliographic survey was conducted in the Bireme and Pubmed databases and in the Scielo and Lilacs databases. Articles in English and Portuguese published from 2011 to 2018 have been used. Inclusion criteria studies were considered by involving experimental procedures performed on adults with morbid obesity, who followed a physical exercise program as bariatric surgery postoperative intervention for a control group. Also independently, the methodological quality of the studies selected was evaluated using the JADAD Quality Scale. Results: The training consisting of combined aerobic and resistance exercises showed a more effective response and when performed in a personalized way were able to provide greater adherence and more significant results. Conclusion: A program composed by aerobic and resisted exercises, when performed in a personalized way in the postoperative period of a bariatric surgery, is able to promote a significant weight loss, decrease of the fat percentage, muscle and strength gains, insulin sensitivity improvement, increase of the physical and aerobic capacity, improvement of the heart rate variability and, mainly, the patient's psychological well-being.
