Abstract

Introduction: After surgery for breast cancer, some complications can lead to restrictions on range of motion (ROM), pain and negative impact on the performance of daily life tasks. In this context, physical therapy has been important in the recovery of functionality. Objective: To evaluate the effect of physical therapy on range of motion, pain intensity and functional performance of the upper limb after breast cancer surgery for women in the menacme. Methods: Non-controlled clinical trial, considering women who underwent surgery for breast cancer associated with axillary lymphonodectomy. ROM were evaluated by fleximetry, pain intensity by visual analog scale (VAS) and functional performance by the questionnaire “arm and hand shoulder deficiency” (DASH). Results: After the 10 physical therapy sessions, a significant increase in ROM was observed for all movements, a decrease in pain intensity from 4.09 ± 2.51 to 2.54 ± 2.18, (p = 0,04), and DASH scores from 35.31 ± 17.23 to 17.75 ± 13.09, (p = 0.001), indicating a significant improvement in functional performance. Conclusion: The physiotherapeutic approach was satisfactory in improving ROM, pain intensity and functional performance in pre-menopausal women. However, monitoring for a longer term and increasing the exercises, can bring additional improvement.
