Aim: To verify the effects of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine on the quality of life and inflammatory markers of asthmatic patients, recording possible adverse effects during treatment. Design: 30 individuals were randomly allocated in 3 groups: control, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine sham (Placebo) and Chinese acupuncture and herbal medicine intervention. Methods: The individuals received 04 sessions of equal duration with pre- and post-treatment assessment of quality of life and inflammatory markers. Medication use was also recorded. Results: A statistically significant difference was found in the quality of life questionnaire, the Vitality indicator (RSVIT) showed a p < 0.005 and the Social Aspects indicator (RSAS) showed a p < 0.004, compared to the pre-moment (p < 0.05 ) in the control, sham and intervention groups; Emotional Aspects (RSEM) with p < 0.003 and Mental Health (RSSM) with p < 0.01 obtained statistical difference only in the Sham and Intervention groups. Two-way ANOVA of repeated measures was used. The others showed no differences and there were no adverse effects. Conclusion: Chinese acupuncture and herbal medicine are safe interventions, but they only have an effect on quality of life over 4 weeks. Further studies are needed on verifying the effect on inflammatory markers and the evaluation of the intervention time.
