Abstract

This study aimed to describe the sociodemographic profile of physical therapy patients with spine chronic pain (CP) and the psychosocial relation after physical exercise. Exploratory-descriptive and interventional study, with quantitative analysis of data, performed at the Clínica Escola de Fisioterapia (CEF) of the University of Vale do Taquari - Univates, Lajeado, RS, Brazil. Data was carried out by means of a questionnaire and the protocols Start Back Screening Tool (SBST), Fear Avoidance Belief Questionnaire (FABQ), SF-36 Quality of Life Questionnaire and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Nine patients with spine CP participated, being allocated in groups: intervention, participated in a health promotion group for four weeks, twice a week, to perform exercises in the CEF; control, received a booklet with the same exercises to be performed at home for the same period. Both groups showed improvement in SF-36, SBST and ODI. In FABQ, they showed improvement in the physical activity item and worsening at work. We concluded that the exercise program used in patients with CP in spine is positive in improving the prognosis and quality of life, reduction of disabilities and beliefs. Even more, home exercises encourage the protagonism of patients.
