Abstract

Introduction: Palliative care is an approach aimed to improving the quality of life of individuals and their families, physically and psychologically affected by incurable pathologies, with the need for multidisciplinary action in all phases of life and at all levels of care, and physical therapy is able to act in a directed way to functional kinetic disorders. Aim: To identify the physical therapy modalities used in palliative care patients. Methods: This is an integrative literature review in Scielo, Pubmed, Lilacs and PEDro databases. Results: A total of 367 articles were selected, 5 were eligible for the present study after the exclusion criteria, 4 were focused on cancer patients and 1 on people living with human immunodeficiency virus. Most demonstrating significant results directed toward improving the quality of life of patients in palliative care with improved mobility and sleep quality, reduced fatigue, greater independence, muscle strength and endurance, increased bone density and goal attainment. Conclusion: The most commonly used physiotherapeutic intervention is physical training, developed from the individual needs linked to the patient's signs, symptoms, and/or functional complaint. Quality studies addressing the topic in question are needed to aid evidence-based practice.
