Abstract

Introduction: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) trigger pain and discomfort in the temporomandibular joint, and may present symptoms such as headache. Therefore, physiotherapeutic treatment has been applied to reduce these symptoms through manual techniques. Objective: To review the impact of physical therapy treatment on headache in patients with TMD. Methods: This is a systematic review study with search for data in the Scielo, Lilacs and Pubmed databases, in which randomized clinical trials were included and studies with histories of facial trauma in children, rheumatic pathologies, neurological diseases, non-randomized studies, case reports, clinical observations and reviews were excluded. The selected articles are in both Portuguese and English. The following keywords were used: relationship between headache and temporomandibular disorder, pain in the temporomandibular joint and head, physiotherapeutic treatment and manual therapy. Results: Of the 5 selected studies, 3 obtained positive results, improving the intensity of headache and the body disharmony syndrome, in addition to the increase in cervical ROM, which in a way also influences TMD. Conclusion: It is concluded that there is a significant improvement in the headache after physical therapy treatment.
