Abstract

Introduction: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic highlighted the work of physical therapists, especially in relation to care for patients affected by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, also known as Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). Objective: The present study aimed to highlight the importance of the work of physical therapists in the care of patients with COVID-19. Methods: This is a literature review using the databases of the Virtual Health Library (VHL), Portal of Periodicals of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) and Medline/Pubmed and the following descriptors: COVID-19 and Respiratory Syndrome and Physical Therapy. The inclusion criteria were studies published from December 2019 to September 2020, in English, Spanish and French, available online, in full and with a full approach to the content. Results: 160 articles were found, of which 32 were selected based on the inclusion criteria. Conclusion: The studies reported clinical and functional improvement from the physical therapy interventions applied to patients, with the measures with the greatest positive impact on early mobilization, aspiration of secretions, monitoring of mechanical ventilation and rehabilitation. It is extremely important for the physical therapist to be part of the multidisciplinary team that makes up the hospital environment.
