Abstract

Introduction: Radical prostatectomy is an effective surgical procedure for the cure of prostate cancer. However, urinary incontinence (UI) is one of the consequences. Objective: To verify the effect of 65 Hz electrostimulation on the UI of patients with sphincter deficiency, resulting from radical prostatectomy surgery. Methods: This is a double-blind RCT. Patients underwent screening and were randomly allocated to three groups: MAP exercise group (EMAP, n = 23), 50 Hz electrostimulation group plus MAP exercises (EE50 + EMAP, n = 19), 65 Hz electrostimulation group plus exercises MAP (EE65 + EMAP, n = 23). The weekly frequency was twice and the number of sessions was that necessary to recover urinary continence, not exceeding 20. The relative risk (RR) and ANOVA 3 X 2 were used for the statistical analysis of the data. Results: The relative risk of UI of the EE65 + EMAP Group in relation to the EMAP Group was equal to 0.48 (95% CI 0.31 to 0.73), while the relative UI risk of the EE50 + EMAP Group in relation to the EMAP Group was equal to 0.89 (95% CI 0.77 to 1.04). Conclusion: The frequency of 65 Hz was more effective than that of 50 Hz in the recovery of urinary continence in men with prostatectomy.
