Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic drastically changed the work routine of physical therapists who worked on the front line in intensive care units, as well as resulting in lasting emotional impacts on these professionals. Objective: To analyze the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the work and emotional performance of physical therapists in intensive care units. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive study carried out with physical therapists of both sexes and all ages. A total of 136 physical therapists were interviewed, using two questionnaires, the first referring to professional and behavioral characteristics and the second about physical and psychological conditions evaluated by the Burnout index in different institutions, two-way ANOVA was used, followed by Tukey's post-test for differences between genders and institutions. Results: Professional experience in intensive care was reported by 93.6% of the physical therapists, 47.1% had been working for more than 10 years, 64% said a weekly workload between 30 and 60 hours, and even so, 80.1% did not consider the sum of the remunerations fair. The percentage of physical therapists with some level of Burnout Syndrome was 85%. There was no difference in Burnout syndrome between the sexes (p = 0.474), on the other hand, the allocation of professionals in federal and private institutions showed a difference in the appearance of the syndrome (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The excessive weekly workload in hospital institutions favors physical and emotional stress, which can trigger Burnout syndrome, impacting mental health, work productivity, and absence from work of intensive care therapists.
