Atualization of the translation and transcultural adaptation of the clinical utility scale of Tyson and Connell

Abstract

Introduction: Clinical usefulness is the ability of an instrument to be short and easy to administer, understand and score. To quantify such aspects, Tyson and Connell developed a scale that assesses the clinical usefulness of instruments used as assessment methods by physical therapists. Although this scale has been translated and adapted to Brazilian-Portuguese, the authors later updated this scale by adding an item. Objective: To update the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Tyson and Connell Clinical Utility Scale. Methods: The process of translating and cross-culturally adapting item five was carried out in five stages, following previous recommendations in the literature: translation, back-translation, synthesis of translations, evaluation by the expert committee and testing of the pre-final version. Results: In the developed version, item five showed few changes, only grammatical changes, aiming at a better understanding when translated into another language, which demonstrates adequate semantic equivalence between the English and Portuguese versions. Conclusion: The final five-item version of the Tyson and Connell clinical utility scale proved to be adequate for assessing the clinical utility of instruments used in the assessment of patients with the most diverse pathologies.
