Abstract

Introduction: Myelomeningocele is the most common neural tube defect in the world, with spinal cord exposure. Children with myelomeningocele present neuromuscular disorders, among other alterations in several body systems, requiring specialized physical therapy treatment. Objective: To discuss the state of the art of physiotherapeutic interventions in children with myelomeningocele. Methods: For this narrative review, searches were conducted in the Pubmed, Scielo, Lilacs and BVS databases, from 2013 to 2023. Seven works were selected because they met the inclusion criteria. Results: Physical therapy interventions in children with myelomeningocele use innovative resources such as whole body vibration, photobiomodulation and exergames. In turn, more traditional resources such as proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, gait training, equine therapy and electrotherapy also continue to be employed. Conclusion: The physiotherapeutic treatments currently used minimize functional kinetic, voiding, social and self-care disorders, while improving quality of life. However, studies with a better evidence level are still needed, especially in neonatology and pediatrics. It is expected that the deepening of the discussion in this field of knowledge will support new studies and protocols, ensuring an excellent physiotherapeutic assistance.
