Abstract

Objective: To assay the effects of a Pilates training program for sedentary elderly people. Methods: This is an experimental study of quantitative nature. Fifteen elderly individuals, both genders, aged 60 to 80 years, underwent a Pilates solo protocol, 15 training sessions, 1 evaluation and 1 re-evaluation, totaling 17 sessions, performed 2 times per week, respectively 50 minutes duration for each session. Data were analyzed using the t-test (for dependent variables) and a significance level of 5% was adopted. Results: Fifteen subjects were included, 3 male and 12 female, with a mean age of 68.2 ± 4.99 years, mean weight of 76.5 ± 9.99 kg, mean height of 1.60 ± 0.06 m and Average Body Mass Index of 29.9 ± 3.97 kg/m². There was a significant difference in flexibility with the mean scores before Pilates intervention 20.4 ± 6.46 cm and after 24.7 ± 5.70 cm (p < 0.001). In the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), there was a decrease in scores before the intervention 13.1 ± 6.38 and after 4.6 ± 2.32 (p < 0.001), as well as in the Sleepiness Scale of Epworth (ESE) before 9.6 ± 3.94 and then 6.7 ± 3.62 (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The Pilates solo method contributed to the gain of flexibility and improvement in sleep quality in sedentary elders.
