Abstract

Several guidelines argue that for a healthy life it is important to practice physical exercises on a regular basis, in order to stimulate health promotion, prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, which reflects in a better quality of life. Thus, physical training becomes a tool of public health interest. However, lack of time and physical limitations are often used as a barrier in engaging a less sedentary life. In these circumstances, the interval training method in the aquatic environment suggests that it is an effective tool in the fight against sedentarism, since it requires less time and uses one possible means to practice physical exercises by those with limitations, chronic or temporary, in the joints or muscles, as well as for recreational workouts or even by more attractive option for some. Therefore, the objective of this study was to elucidate the benefits of high intensity interval training in the aquatic environment through a literature review of studies which explored the high-intensity interval training and its possible relationship with the aquatic environment. The proposed training method was efficient, safe and adaptable, providing health benefits and improvements for different audiences. The studies show improvements in physical conditioning encompassing both central and peripheral adaptations. Thus, knowing that aquatic environment is one possible means in the quest for quality of life, more researches in this area are necessary to clarify better the method, the necessary adaptations in the environment, and the benefits for different audiences.
