The acute effects of phototherapy on muscle capacity in the elderly were evaluated. Randomized double-blind crossover clinical trial. Seven elderly people were randomized into two groups: phototherapy group (PG) and placebo phototherapy group (PPG). The first group received phototherapy applied to six points of the quadriceps femoris muscles in the first session and placebo in the second, while the second group was subjected to the opposite. The individuals were evaluated for muscle strength, sit-up test and 2-minute walk test. For statistical analysis, 2-way ANOVA was used with repeated measures with Student-Newman-Keuls post-hoc and significance level of 5%. There was an increase in performance in the sit-up test (GF: 8.50 ± 5.94% vs. GP: -2.44 ± 7.13%; p = 0.0121) and in the 2-minute walk test (GF: 7.12 ± 3.31% vs. GP: -1.41 ± 4.68%; p = 0.0021). Muscle strength gain was not observed through the muscle strength test with a modified sphygmomanometer (GF: 0.67 ± 2.65% vs. GP: 2.06 ± 6.29%; p = 1.00). These findings indicate that phototherapy is able to improve muscle capacity in the elderly population.
